If I receive a bonus of $5,000 and the company takes 50% out in taxes, is that legal? What is the usual standard?

Taxes aren't up to the business. Taxes go to the government. All of my coworkers and I also had nearly 50% taken out of our bonus checks in taxes too.

I agree that taxes should be withheld but this does sound like a very high rate. I would think, normal deduction should be in the $1600 ballpark
