I believe you can. Im not totally sure, but, you may need to download something for the xp comp though? If so, it allows the xp comp to recognize the win 7 comp. My cousin did it to mine, but I wasn't there to see what he did. I was only transferring files, but they were connected to a network, together.

What exactly do you mean by network? What are you trying to accomplish?
