My ceiling fan will not reverse direction. I made the mistake of changing directions while the fan was still running. The fan would not change direction. After the blades stopped turning, the motor would only hum. I had to change the direction switch back to original position to get the fan to run again in the original direction. Anyone have any idea what happened when I operated the direction switch while fan was still moving?

I don't know if a bad winding could do that. Many reversing switches have 4 wires, that swap connections. I wonder if the reversing switch is partially damaged?
Temporarily wiring without the switch would be an easy test. If it rotates one direction, swap the pair and it should reverse?
