    Unmarried Father's Rights
My boyfriend and I broke up last year; we were never married and are the parents of a 15 month old from Washington State. My ex's name is on the birth certificate as the father and we are on good terms. I got closer with a long time male friend who lives in a different country and we plan to get married. The problem is we are unable to decide which country to live in based on the child's father as we do not understand his rights. My mother told me my ex has the right to refuse me taking my son to a different country but I cannot find that in any site I've found, so I don't know if it's true. Though I am sure things would be better should we move to my fiance's country, I would never deprive my ex of his rights or any visitations. Is it true he can stop me from taking my son to live in another country?

If he asks the courts to award him specified visitation rights, and you take the child to another country, the father's ability to exercise that court-ordered visitation would probably be impacted. So yes, he could get an order prohibiting you from taking the child out of the country and perhaps even out of the state.

At this point there is no court order but you and he can either go and ask for one. If he files he can stop you from moving out the area. ( it would stop him from having a relationship with his child)
