    If you don't see the ring in the bottom, it's probably gone, unfortunately. There are no external traps for a toilet so it goes directly into the main sewer line.

    As noted above, the ring is probably gone, but if you have not used any water down the toilet since, you may still be able to locate it, especially if worth thousands of dollars... read on.

    If it was worth thousands or you simply feel that it is nonreplaceable then I would suggest that you call a local plumbing or sewer and drain cleaning company with a drain inspection camera and have them explore the toilet and the drain line using the camera. Once the ring was located it could be retrieved, but just how easily it could be retrieved would be the question.

    In some cases I've heard about over the years, people from the city/town sewer departments got involved and using cameras and jetters and netting found some rings for people... made for great local news... ;)

    Anyway, an option or two... MAYBE?
