My computer keeps popping up with a warning message saying my computer is infected with a virus/trojans snd says do I want to remove, when I click yes it takes me too a website that I have to pay for protection( mine must have run out as I bought my laptop off my bro when he went abroad ) and was wondering if this is the best option to purchase what comes up or are there better ways of getting rid of it which don't cost a great deal of money, I'm a bit of a novice at pc's any help would be great thanks

The "virus" is actually programmed to trick you into spending money. Don't buy the protection, its fake and steals you card details.

I will second NK on this one. While AVG is nice, I actually prefer MalwareBytes.

Remember when you scan always scan first while you're in safe-mode.

After nine years of awesome service on my 6 computers, I'll add my recommendation for AVG Free.

I'm not saying AVG is bad but where is the cummalative evidence stating it is the best?

I used to use AVG but they went through a version change where they added a bunch of needless monitoring tools that slowed down my PC and the PC of my clients that I had recommended it to. That's when I started doing my research and went to Avira then Avast and now MSE.

I have used a variety of AV throughout the years and as of right now I feel most comfortable with MalwareBytes. Does this mean I think it is the best? No, does this mean I disreguard others? No.

What I am asking is who's to say one is better then the others? There is no colletive test, and if you find one then I could easily find one saying something different.

There is no universal test for AV programs. This; I think, presents an issue. As having a standard testing system would in fact specify strong and weak points in free AV software.

P.S. I had no issue with the post until the poster above stated AVG was proven to be the best. This is inaccurate. That's like me saying it's proven Chevy's are better then Ford.
