Is your visa or I-94 expiring in 2 months? Are you in the US now?

    Not enough information.

Private instruction will be difficult for a nonimmigrant visa. The most common visa for a teacher is the H-1B, but the cap was reached on 1/26/2011.

What is your degree in? Are you from Canada, then possibly a TN. If Australia, the E-3. dependent of a spouse?

Generally, you would need an offer of employment in a position that requires your degree. But the H-1B's are capped, so, yes, you could look to file for a change of status to J-1.

Talk to the PA and they can advise specifically if you are eligible. They will usually file the COS for you. You'll need evidence of funds to pay for tuition and expenses, etc.

Find a petitioner with a qualifying job or J-1 sponsor with a qualifying exchange program, consult with an immigration attorney or the PA to determine that you are eligible; and they will prepare and file the change of status petition, form I-129 and other forms.

You do not go the USCIS office.

Go to the school district's website and ask if they sponsor fro H1b visas. A lot of schools in California are looking for teachers, so ask if some of them sponsor, then they can file a H1b visa for you.

Remember, if they file for you now, you cannot begin work until October 1, 2011. When the FY starts.
