    Code violation electrical
I am doing some inspection on some electrical work done on some commercial building. The first thing I noticed was in the ceiling someone used a nonmetallic cut-in box with drywall wings to put a recept in the ceiling tile. I know it is a code violation I just can't find it I need some guidance.

I don't see a problem with how the receptacle is installed. The issue should be is non-metallic cable allowed in the ceiling plenum of a commercial building.

You will need to review Section 334.10 of the 2008 edition of the NEC, and determine the type construction the building is classified.

NM cable is not allowed above a drop ceiling in a commercial space, regardless if it is a plenum air space or not.

Who are you inspecting this for and under what authority?

Stan, I responded as I did as first the inspector should know that NM is not allowed above a suspended ceiling in commercial buildings, and of course, there are certain states that waived this requirement.

They thought it was silly that NM is allowed in the partitions, but not in the ceiling, of certain type construction.

And I meant just the space above a suspended ceiling, not specifically air plenum space.

    Ah, no problem.

I am wondering what type of "inspection" the OP is doing.

Same here, that is another reason why I was vague.
