What is required for claiming education cost from a foreign university - tax return
As I know, one need to obtain a 1098-T form from a US university to claim education benefit in filing US tax return. My child is studying in an European university. Anyone over there could advise what is required from a foreign university for the tax purpose?

    Many thanks!

All you need is to PROVE that you paid the tuition, so a statement from the university's registrar should be sufficient.

However, you MUST make sure that the European university is an eligible educational institution. The university should know one way or the other.

AtlantaTaxExpert, Thank you very much for your answer.

Can you please advise me how to find out if the European university is an eligible educational institution?

    Best regards.

On 2010 tax return, tuiton and fee deduction is not there even with 1098-T.

For purposes of the tuition and fees deduction (was there in 2009), qualified education expenses are tuition and certain related expenses required for enrollment or attendance at an eligible educational institution.

An eligible educational institution is any college, university, vocational school, or other postsecondary educational institution eligible to participate in a student aid program administered by the U.S. Department of Education. It includes virtually all accredited public, nonprofit, and proprietary (privately owned profit-making) postsecondary institutions. The educational institution should be able to tell you if it is an eligible educational institution.
Certain educational institutions located outside the United States also participate in the U.S. Department of Education's Federal Student Aid (FSA) programs.
