Have you checked with the specific non profit you are talking about? Also, there are different kinds of not for profit/non profits under the IRS code. Generally speaking, employees are entitled to various
Benefits, i.e.: life insurance, health insurance, dental,
Corporate pension plans, etc... I do not believe there are limits imposed on them by IRS code, though I admit I am not sure. If you are an employee, check with the HR department. If you are looking to incorporate as a not for profit, get an attorney in Ill.
An employee of a non profit is able to receive almost the same level of benefits as an employee of any organization.
There are some limits on profit sharing and pension plans because there are no profits to determine contributions. But health and life insurance, time off, bonuses etc. are certainly benefits you can receive.
However, an organization does not HAVE to give benefits. Other than the recent health care law that Obama pushed through and maybe some local laws, there is little required of ANY employer to provide benefits. Benefits are a tool used by employers to attract employees. So if the particular organization has not chosen to offer benefits, that is there right.
To determine what may be required or not, I would check with the IL Dept of Labor.
Are you asking because you are responsible for the organization or because you are an employee? How big is the organization in terms of employees?
