No, I believe a 2 year lease is allowed as even longer.

A one year lease if not renewed will turn into a month to month.
And normally there will not be an automatic renewal, a new lease will need to be signed.

But if he said one year, before you signed, and signed a 2 year, while he lied, normally things said before are not binding, if it is spelled out specificly in the written lease which should be read before being signed.
