Our rental house has two gas furnaces one for upstairs and one for downstairs. Last year, no problem, this year, when the furnaces are off and the wind blows, we get cold air blowing in.

We live in El Paso and use swamp coolers in the summer. So every fall and spring, the furnace guys come over and change the sys to either cool or heat as appropriate.

I assume this time, a vent or something was left open. I will be calling the rental management people to have someone come over soon. I just thought I would like to be able to suggest something to look at when they get here.

In a system like you have there are two dampers "things that you mentioned that are changed to fit the heat or cool as appropriate" I would guess that one of these was left open or has partially come open over time. I would say that the one under the Evap AC is the one open.

Hey - thanks for the answer. I mentioned this to a neighbor yesterday and it turns out he has some experience in this arena and said basically the same thing. I will be getting the furnace "guy" back out here ASAP.

It does not sound to me that it is a gate issue, though it is very unlikely that both units are now working properly. However, in these systems the duct systems are "shared" by both units (swamp cooler and heat). If the gate was not set right, you should not be feeling any air moving.

Let us know what was the issue if you can...

I missunderstood the original comment. Yes, I agree that most likely a gate was not properly closed on the swamp unit.

Again thanks, the furnace guy came to day and sure enough the gates/dampers for both swamp coolers had NOT been inserted/closed. He closed them and the breezes in my house stopped!
