A year ago I had a receding gum line on one tooth. An x ray showed this tooth had suffered bone loss. I had a gum graft, and it was successful. But my x-ray at the dentist today showed my bone loss for that one tooth is still substantial and I think worse than before. I was told to come back in 6 months or sooner if it causes a pain. I am terrified - can this tooth just fall out? Why is it still getting worse? The dentist said my teeth were looking great and was really shocked by the amount of bone loss in this one tooth. I can't bear the thought of losing a front tooth.

Yes, a tooth can fall out from bone loss. Sounds like periodontal disease and usually if it is quite bad a lot more then just gum grafting is done. Gum grafting doesn't retard the bone from wasting away. The procedure to repair bone loss is called 'scaling' and if the dentist is qualified, they do it, or you are referred to a periodontist for the surgery.
