Hi.. I'm hoping that someone can help me with this one.. I have a 12 year old female Rottwiler that has been very active since that day we got her as a pup.. shes always been in good weight and would loveeee to eat.. she would eat anything, all was good for her... but the problem now is that for the past 2 weeks she will not eat anything!! A month ago it started by her not finishing her dry food.. then as the month past she would start to leave all of her food when it was time to eat.. we would try to mix some wet food, and she would only eat the wet food and spit out the dry food.. then as the weeks went by, she just wouldn't eat any kind of "dog food" and would beg us to give her our food whenever we ate.. we thought this food change was because she's older now.. we took her to the vet and he touched her and examined her and said she seems fine and looks great and that it must be that she's getting at that old age.. this was 2 weeks ago that we took her to the vet... ever since then, now she will not eat anything!! She's losing weight fast.. she won't eat anything we give her, and when she does take some food its only a tiny bit and then when she doesn't want more she'll spit it out or turn her head away... I really don't know what to do anymore.. I don't know what to give her so she'll eat.. last night she puked, and for the past month now she always passing gas... plzz can somebody help me

I'm sure you know that 12 is a very good age for a Rottie. Although I am quite surprised that the vet did not run any tests and only did a physical exam?
Even if it is just old age the vet should have at least done bloods and an x-ray to try and determine exactly what is wrong so you can make her comfortable.

I would seek a second opinion from another vet and ask that tests be done.

Thanks shazamatez for your answer.. yess indeed 12 is good for a rottie :) she gets lots of love from us, she's a good rotti that we all love so much so its stressful to see her not eatting.. we have made another appointment to see the vet for blood test and x-rays to be done.. hopefully its nothing bad and can be taken care of

I agree with shaz, I am disappointed the vet did not do more during the first appointment. Blood draws could tell a great deal about liver and kidney function. The test could also check for or rule out Addisons Disease. Did the vet suggest a diet like chicken and rice?

No diet as for now.. we just dropped my rottie to the vet where she will be staying there for a few hrs so they can get a blood test to check her kidneys, liver and pancreas.. as well they will be taking x-rays.. I really do hope its not some type of cancer and that what ever the reason she's not eatting is cureable...

Thank u shaz.. the x-rays came yesterday.. and they came back good.. her heart is good her liver and kidneys are good as well, there is no signs of cancer as well :D... her blood test came in today and what they found was that she has pancreatitis... caz I forgot to mention here that 2 weeks ago she had snuck upstairs and went threw the washroom garbage and ate some stuff in it... and its from there that she has neglected food completely.. so we were making her wrose by feeding her meats like hotdogs and sauges.. we were just trying to give her food to eat we didn't know why she wouldn't eat :(.. so the vet said it must have been something she ate that didn't set well and gave her pancreatitis and it's a bit swollen and sensitive right now.. but she is on meds the vet gave us. Our vet informed us to not give her anything to eat, nothing at all.. only to give her this medication food that cost a lot of money... but I am happy to say that my rotti is feeling a lottt better.. her mood is up again and her face doesn't look like as if she's in pain.. she has her energy back and feels a lot better.. she is even begging for food again whenever we eat which is a good sign.. that u shaz and ball for all your help and support :D

Wow, good news. I know pancreatitis can become chronic. Did he give you diet restrictions when she gets better?

Yup.. she is now on a low fat diet.. she has to eat this type of presription diet food for gastrointestinal health.. they gave a case of it... she seems to like it but we have to give her very small portions of it during the day for awhile, until her pancreais heals fully... she is no longer aloud to eat "people food"... but boild chicken and rice is acceptable for her.

I'm glad it is something manageable, that is excellent news. While pancreatitis can be recurring and isn't pleasant, it is much better than the alternative.

If you keep her on a low fat diet and don't give any table scraps you can definitely avoid future attacks. Some dogs can react to just a small amount of fat from a piece of sausage, while others can eat a whole tub of butter with no ill effects, I always play it safe either way. You know the old saying "better to be safe than sorry".

How much exercise does she get?
Is her joint health OK?
