I have a 11 week old amstaff. He has been peeing blood for 3 weeks. He has been on 4 different meds now. The vets have run test after test. It is showing that he has 2 types of bacteria in he's bladder. After they put him on this last medication (baytril) he peed yellow for about 1 1/2 days and is now back to peeing blood. He has had x-rays done, which showed nothing and had blood work done today. Should hear back tomorrow about the blood work. I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of this before. Thank.

Wow, that's awful! I'm so sorry for your pup.Where did you get your staffy? Unfortunately there isn't much we can offer from what your vets can do. Shazzy, our other dogs expert might know of a different medication you could ask your vet about.

I am assuming he keeps getting bladder infections? I have seen frequent bladder and UTI's in some of the rescues that come in from holding their urine for long periods. Some dogs don't fully eliminate their urine in one go which can also cause infections. Also remember that some dogs can take up to a full year to be fully house trained, so if you are leaving him for long periods at a time it could be a contributing factor.And I would assume that the vet would have tested for Salmonella and E coli?

Also a lot of commercial dog foods are high in salt (and other garbage), and the dogs become dehydrated and don't get enough water. Does your dog get enough to drink, is there always fresh water available 24/7?

When I'm home I take him out every 2 hours, unless he tells me he has to go. I'm home all day, everyday pretty much. The only time he holds it is at night. Not because we make him, good heaven no. Its because we wake him up at 11 or 12 to take him out and he sleeps till 7 or 8. I have started putting water in his food just to make sure he's getting enough. And I always check his water because it gets dirty after he eats. He always drops food in it so I clean it with just hot water NO soap, just to make sure its clean.

I would suggest a change in diet as Bella has done.

I know of one dog who continually bled from the anus and vulva (I am talking torrents of blood) all because she had an intolerance to raw chicken.

Try switching to an all natural brand of food, I'm not guaranteeing it will help but it can't hurt and I think it's a healthier option anyway.

You can also ask your vet to check for diabetes, as often it can present itself similar to bladder infections. As the sugar levels spike, the dog shows signs of a bladder infection which would explain it recurring.

when a small puppy pees blood, especially if it's being bottle fed, the condition us usually due to dehydration. Puppies that are being totally hand raised must pee often .. this is usually accomplished by the mother licking the genitals to stimulate peeing/bowel movements. If there is no mother, take a damp paper towel and mimick the mother's actions by gently patting or rubbing the genitalia/anus, which will usually result in voiding. If you are not up for this .. then don't take on the task as hand raised puppies are very dependant for the first 10 - 12 weeks of their little lives. Once the teeth buds begin to break through, you are pretty much home safe :) But back to the peeing bood = at leat every two hours try to get some fluid down the puppy and use the paper towel tip. The blood should begin to clear up within several hours and if not within two days a trip to the vet is warranted. Good Luck.

This particular puppy is 11 weeks old and eating, drinking, peeing, pooping on its own.

If this round of antibiotics doesn't clear things up, speak to your vet about doing a culture and sensitivity on the urine. (If it hasn't already been done)
It could be that the bacteria isn't responding to the antibiotics prescribed.
This test will show the type of bacteria and the antibiotics that that particular bacteria is sensitive to.
I hope the Baytril does it for him.
How is he otherwise?
