My partner and I are trying for a baby he works away 2 weeks and only home for 1 week every 3 weeks.. Im so confused on all this ovulation stuff. Can you only fall pregnant during ovulation? My period is all over the place the last one I had was a normal 30 day cycle but the 3 periods before that were every 40 days and then before that I had 2 years of only getting it every 3 months once I stopped taking the pill. So the main question I'm asking is is it possible to just fall pregnant at any time or is it only during a certain time of your cycle.

You can only become pregnant during certain times of your cycle, when you're ovulating.

If you don't know when you ovulate, because your cycle is all over the place, you can get ovulation kits at your local pharmacy. They're a lot like a pregnancy test. You pee on a stick, and it tells you if you're ovulating.

Have you spoken to your doctor about trying to get your cycles regulated? As Alty said, you can only get pregnant when you ovulate. Generally you ovulate each cycle and the egg is viable for only about 24 hours. Sperm can survive a few days just prior to ovulation as your body changes to prepare for the release of an egg, otherwise they die off quickly.

You may or may not be ovulating each month. Irregular cycles, along with your partner not being able to be home frequently, will make it more challenging.

Given your circumstances, I would see your gyn for a preconception visit to discuss the situation.
