The ductwork in my basement has white chalky crumbly residue on the outside. My home is 7 years old and the basement is unfinished. The white residue falls off on everything that we have in the basement. What is this and what is causing this? Also how can I fix it?

If the system was ran during construction it may be sheet rock dust your seeing. The only way to get it out is clean the ducts. That's the #1 reason why hvac systems should not be ran during construction.

This is on the outside... almost like corrosion or rust
