Pay the back taxes! If you can't pay in full, see if you can work out some payment plane with the tax collector to forestall the auction.

So as long as the tax collector lets me set up a payment plan and some payments are made they can't auction it?

You get an agreement in writing with the tax collector that states the payment arrangement and stipulates that as long as you comply with the agreement, the auction will be postponed.
