What constitues landlord harassment in the state of NJ?
I have had ongoing problems with my landlord (who live next door)since moving into this apartment ranging from lawn maitenance problems and knocking on my door at 7a the first of every month to most recently, having them show up at my child support hearing.

In honesty, I have been late with my rent twice. Once by 8 days and most recently by 2 weeks. The most recent time, I felt it better to be honest and explain why the rent was late. I informed them about recent court dates causing me to miss work and my upcoming date for a child support hearing. (to start receiving child support).
On that day, my landlord showed up and sat through the whole hearing. (I didn't see him till I was leaving the hearing room) I know that I am not obligated to provide child support imformation to them and they never asked if I minded if the attend.

Every time I drop off the rent to them, I get some sort of lecture... basically demeaning me and threatening eviction. This past time I was warned about the fireplace use since they don't believe I am paying my utilities. (all my utlities are paid).

Any suggestions on how to handle this situation?

You don't think you're going to change them, do you? You don't have a lease. They can have you put out in 30 days if they want to, so you don't have any leverage with them. Yup. Move.

I do have a lease... a one year lease.

Ok, they are very strick landlords, and they come over on the 1st to get their rent, since they live next door I would guess this is the time you are up, so they come after the rent.

As a landlord, if I did not go and go and knockon doors on the 1st, I would never get paid.

You have a obligation to pay your rent on the 1st, and because you did not, and you told them about the hearing, they went, nothing illegal and you did tell them about it.

And when you see them, if they wish to give you advice, tell them to stop giving you advice, you don't want it.
