How do I install a check valve to prevent sewer gas from coming back in building
We operate a samll dry cleaners and laundry. Our boiler room has a floor drain that is basically a rectangular box in the floor with a 3" drain in the bottom of the cement. The box is about 18" deep and approximately 30" long by 18" wide. Our boiler steam condensate drains into this drain and then when we blow down the boiler each day after laundry operations are complete the water from boiler drains into the drain which goes out directly to the main wasetwater line from the city. The problem we have, especially on cold days like we have had the smell from this drain is horrendous and very offending to our customers. How or what can we do to get rid of this horrid smell. It is obviously sewer gas from the smell?

    Hi Laundrymanss...

Check valve may not be the right answer here...

Can you tell me if this is a properly trapped and vented floor receptor? If the vent is present, does it combine with other vents or go straight out through the roof? Do you have any other floor drains/receptors?

You said temperature is an issue. Is this an issue all year 'round or pretty new and you just noticed mostly on cold days?

Answer my questions and then I'll post my thoughts...

Chances are you don't have trap installed. Can you snap a picture of the drain and post it for us ? I suspect they used wrong drain set up... Back to you... Milo
