Closet light with attached junction box
I currently have the space above my first floor exposed for a renovation. I can see that two first floor closet lights are of the type where there is an attached junction box - similar to this

My question - I assume these must be allowed somewhere because they are still available, but wouldn't the electrical connections/box be inaccessible after the ceiling is finished? You can see in the picture that the box only opens from the top. How is this allowed? Should I replace them while I have the chance? What I had wanted to do before seeing this is branch another line off the box, but I wouldn't want even more connections to be hidden. Am I missing something?

    Thanks

All recessed lights, even these, allow access to the j-box from inside the can, that or the whole can is removable.

Thanks for the quick response. The picture in the link was not quite the same type - here is the actual light

Was not immediately obvious to me that this would be accessible, but after your comment and giving it another look I think you are right - thanks.

How about using this box to branch out to another wire or 2? I would assume that is okay - box is stamped 24 cu in.

If you notice those two bent over silver things in the pic, at roughly 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock, those are screw studs inside the fixture. In there will be two nuts. If you remove those two nuts the whole box/socket assembly can be slid out into the fixture housing.

There is plenty of room to add a wire or two.

Great - that will make things a lot easier. Thanks again!

Was there a cover on this Jbox? I see some mouse droppings and they will chew the wiring. Make sure the box has a cover.

Be sure that you provide a loop of wire when you add to this box or you may not have enough slack to lower the fixture. I'll assume this is a swithed light, so if you branch off this box everything on the circuit will be switched as well. Was that your intention?

My work on this is now finished up - thanks to all for the help and suggestions. To follow up on the last few posts - Yes, there is a cover on the box, I just had it removed at the time of the picture. And as for it being a switched light, it simply has a pull string switch as part of the fixture. Therefore only the wires that run from the box to the light would be on a switch. Thanks for bringing these points up though.
