I want something that gets at least 30mpg highway... Should I go with used or new?

My go-to answer is always "Honda Civic".

Buy a new Honda or Toyota, get the shop manual, use full synthetic engine oil and full synthetic transmission fluid, follow the Owner's Manual for regular preventive maintenance, and drive it until the wheels fall off.
