We are taking out an OLD one piece bathtub from a 59" space and all we can find are 60" bathtubs or a 54" bath tub. My question is,can we trim about an inch off of the end of the tub oppsite the drain? Most tubs I have looked at have a 2 to 3 inch "Lip" at that end. We are also putting up a 3 piece wall surround so I'd have to trim 1/2" off each end,correct? Thanks for any help at all!

If you cut the tub lip off you won't have any way to fix it to the wall studs. You are probably better to trim the wall stud(s) to 60" with a sawzall or similar. Is the 59" stud to stud or to drywall? 59" would usually be drywall distance. You could frame the wall out and use the 54". Is the 54" for a Mobile Home?

Hey thanks for quick response. The 59" is from drywall to drywall. I had thought about trimming the studs but wouldn't that put the tub end(oppsite the drain) back into the wall? If so,how would the wall surround fit the tub? This is a 1st for me. I really don't know about the 54". Thanks again.

If the 59" is from drywall to drywall............remove the drywall from both ends exposing the studs. Assuming you have 1/2" drywall, that will give you the needed 60" if you mount the tub and surround directly to the studs. That's how I did mine... no drywall behind the tub and surround. When you reapply the drywall it will go over the mounting lip on the tub and surround.
