We have a Carrier furnace and occasionally it won't come on unless we open and shut the heater panel/door. When it is on it works great but even when the temperature is on "hold" setting it will shut off and then sometimes require us to open and shut the furnace panel/door. It doesn't happen all the time.

We called a repairman who said he could find nothing wrong. Any idea what is causing this?

There is a safety interlock switch on the door that is misaligned or broken. Depending in the type of switch you may be able to bend a tang , tighten the switch or shim it out. If the door is loose, try to tighten it up or tape it shut until the switch is repaired.
