    Booting/reinstalling impossible
    I'm using windows xp pro
    I've got a lite-on combo cd drive :E

Basically I tried 2 fix my e drive because it wasn't reading cds (on dvds) and I think I put a virus on my computer

When I tried 2 restart it came up with something like..
Windows cannot start up properly due to a recent hardware of software change
    Please start windows using
    Safe mode
    Safe mode and networking
    Safe mode with command prompt
    Start using most recent settings
    Or normally

All lead basically to the same error message
    \windows\system32\config\system is missing or corrupt
Put in the original SETUP cd and press are at 1st screen to repair

Sooo basically I don't have the original disk
I don't mind formatting the hard drive and putting it back to windows 98se (which I have disks for)

I have tried using the system restore floppy and cd but the computer won't read the cd!

I don't know if getting a new cd drive will solve the problem?

    Help?

Amazing.. you managed to keep your Win98 cd's around but lost the more expensive XP cd's.. or did you just give it back to the person you borrowed it from?

You will need a Win98 boot floppy.. You will need to use the floppy to boot to DOS.. Once at a:\ prompt, you will need to run fdisk to remove all non-dos partitions.. Run fdisk again to remove any Promary DOS partition, and then reboot and run fdisk again to set a Primary DOS partition.. Say YES to any questions once you get to that step..

After the hdd has been partitioned, you boot using the floppy obce more and use the format command to format the hdd.. again, say yes to all questions..

Once formatting is over, you can use your Win98 cd to istall Windows..

That is true but I don't have the cd, therefore my problem, plus my cdrom drive doesn't read any disks, if it did I would be able to reboot my computer but apperently I can't just reboot from the floppy I also need the cd drive to be working

Plain old cd drives are a dime a dozen nowadays.. Buy a new one and install it..
