Can my family take my son away just because I'm dating a felon who already served his time before we ever met. He was convited of burglary and violation of probation.. He has been out of jail now for 2years and hasn't done anything to get go back.. Can my family take my son away just because of that when there isn't any physical or emotional harm being done.

Yes they have threatened to take my son away because I'm dating a felon. They said that they will get custody of him because he is a felony. No nothing has been filed in court and no they haven't involved family services.

The likelihood is extremely small that they will be able to do anything. If they continue to threaten, tell them he has paid his debt to society and deserves another chance. Plus, you have researched and been told their chances of getting guardianship or custody are about nil.

I Didn't think they could because if he isn't doing any harm to me or my son then what would they have to go with in court.. I know that if they call DCF they will come out and investagate me but I keep a clean house, Food in his mouth and clothes on his back.. So what would there be.. They threatin that they make more money then me and will pay lawyers to get my rights taken away but I don't see how if I'm not doing wrong..

If they do hire a lawyer they could twist things. And you would be better off having your own attorney. But making more money will not be a criteria for the court. As long as you show you can and have provided for your child and that you are not putting the child in any danger, it sounds more like empty threats to me.

The fact of the matter is, YOU are in the drivers seat here - NOT them. If YOU decide they can't visit with your son, they CANNOT. Grandparent rights, if any, are just emerging. If they went to court to court to seek rights, and you told the court WHY you turned them down, they'll NEVER win...

Now, I don't know if you want to USE your power to shut them up, but I certainly would... In fact, I'd do it in a letter addressed to my family telling them the facts of life.

Well there saying that they will get lawyers involved and that because they make more money then I do that the courts will award them custody. I don't understand how that can work. I thought in many states that someone has to prove the mother and father are unfit. I have split custody with my sons father. My sons father gets him one night a week and every other weekend. What rights do they have to hold my boyfriends criminal record against me. I don't want to do anything to lose my son and I don't know where to go to look up information. I went to The DCF website but it just states if they believe a child is being neglected. What is there I can do for them to stop this nonsense

You consult your own attorney. But people who think they can buy anything with money are often in for a rude awakening.
