While doing your undergrad work in Comp Sci, take a class or two in AI (genetic algorithms or something), and then try to TA for that class when you feel ready. Get to know the professor and ask about spending a summer as a research fellow so that your name will go on his/her published work. Continue on this track through grad school if you really want to make it.

AI isn't a field you break into from computer science. The concept of it being something unto itself is long gone. It's part and parcel with the hardware and software and innovations of all of technology and computers. I suppose if you limit it to just trying to imitate the human brain, you can, but the lines are blurred and the possibilities wide open.
