Is there a court order for child support yet ?

If not, you go to court for an ageement.

You can either pay by check, which would give you a "receipt" showing that the money was paid. However, my state(Wisconsin) clearly expresses that any money not paid through the Child Support Agency is not considered to be child support; your state may or may not view it the same way.

If you want it to be legit, you'd have to file a motion with the courts. If you have not been established as the child's legal father through either a court-ordered DNA test or by signing a paternity acknowledgment, you will have to take the DNA test to prove you are the biological father. This will also give you the opportunity to establish a visitation schedule if there isn't one currently in place.

Depending on your state guidelines, the amount you currently pay could increase or decrease. The difference is that right now, there's nothing forcing you to pay - once there is a court order, the state can and will come after you for the money if you fall behind.
