Hello, We just bought a house with Corian countertops. The way the countertops are now, there is a hole cut in the top for a drop-in cooktop and it has a separate oven underneath. We'd like to use a regular range/oven stove. Can the section of corian with the hole in it for the cooktop (plus about a quarter inch on either side) be cut out? We're not going to try to do this ourselves for fear we'll mess it up, but is it possible, even for a professional, to do this without causing cracks, and to smooth off the edges? And do you have any idea about how much this will cost? Thank you.

If you contact an authorized Corian dealer/installer they can modify your counter top to accommodate your desire to install a range/oven stove. Corian is expensive to install but when I had mine installed they told that it can be easily repaired or modified. I have no idea what the cost would be to modify yours.

Any good carpenter/renovator with a router and a jig can cut the Corian in an hour. It won't crack or break and will be smooth. If it has to be cut all the way back to a wall as opposed to out in open space in an island, the router can't get the last 3" or so and it will take longer to use a fine tooth saw or a multimaster. Since this is a small job, you might get cheaper rates by the hour, and plan on ~3 hours (to cover time to and from the job) at about $45-50/hr. That's recession rates.
