Ok my dog was off her food Tuesday 14 dec at night finally ate but threw it all up Wednesday morning had diarrhea went to vets was given med to stop vomit and starved 24 hrs followed by boiled chicken and rice. 24 hrs later dog would not eat she's usually very boisterous and loud she not barking eitherso I take her back to vets she is given anti inflamatory injection and advices me to give her aquaruis to pep her up.Next day Friday still not eating or drinking straight to vet left there with I've x rays and bloodwork done. X ray is clear bloodwork shows infection and is given different antibiotics ( was given antibiotics on Tuesday too) dog gets a lot better comes home and is hungry as hell eats her chicken and rice but carefully is barking and playful etcsame
goes for Saturday but I see a slight decline in the evening put it down to having been so stressed the previous 3 days Sunday OK she's more subdued and went drinking suddenly yelped and then wouldn't eat again shed run to the chicken but cower away and not eat managed to feed her lean ham and chicken roll she looked bright and enthusiastic but is again lying low and won't even bark at the door I know you arnt all vets but I
am wondering if anyone has ever had a dog with similar symptoms she's eating a small bit now but very small portions nearly biting my finger off with enthusiasm but abruptly stops and is not interested anymore

Wow, your poor little girl! Unfortuanatly we can't diagnose your girl, and even if some of us have experienced some of the same sympoms, we couldn't pin point what it would be. In cases like this it's always best to follow your vet's advice. I know it's frustrating and you are worried sick about her. Remember you always have the option to seek another vet if you feel yours is missing something.

My best guess would be there is a blockage somewhere, and is now infected, and the one dimensional x-rays are not picking up on it.

Hi thank u for your opinion much appreciated I took her this morning to the only other vet here and did more x-rays they also came back clear the first set of x-rays showed a completely empty digestive tract ( she hadn't eaten for 3 days!) t
Her head through stomach all was xrayed on each side and lying back as I was extremely paranoid because my mums dog suffered an obstruction 2 months back she is eating little bits at a time but doesn't through anything up and is in no way bloated today she's barking a bit more and seems more playful they insist if I notice the slightest bit of decline to take her back asap I know both of the vets pretty well they were going to sleep her to put a scope down her throat today but she was so much happier and not dehydrated etc that instead they felt down her throat and clear saliva came up heart beat normal and no fever but she's had no fever since the beginning vet said she miggt be a bit scared of feeling sick again and is being careful when eating that a 4 kilo dog having ate 4 chicken breats rice and mash in7 small meals would have tgroan up or at least bloated a bit she had mucus covered stools yesterday little bit took to analyse as there was rice in it thought it was worms u until the male dog had a similar one without mucus sorry tmi anyway will keep posted and I talked to the vet on extending tge meds through christmas as my first pup died when he finished antibiotics and the emergency vet was too far of by tge time he got seen he was dying of septicaemia I was given him for christmas and his tail was docked and open u can imagine had to get all redone and many vet visits anyway I am against docking but I couldn't just give an ill dog away I had to try my best so hopefully my girl will be great soon fingers crossed its all I ask for xmas:)

Your post brought tears to my eyes, you did everything I would have done in your shoes! I remember the first time I saw rice in stool, I freaked, I thought my poor dog was infested with worms, imagine my embaressment when I took the sample into the vets and he told me it was rice :o

Just a small question after not eating since Tuesday had diahrrea small bit on wed and the only ate like half the meat of a small chiken thigh on Thursday she was on fluids fri and been eating small portions of bland food since then and only that small bit of rice covered loose mucus stool showed up when should she be pooping again ? I asked vet both of them felt around her tummy confirmed she has no bloat and just say her tract was so empty it takes long to fill up again she hasn't vomited anything since Tuesday if it where an obstraction or constipation shed be trying to go but she isn't bothered they explained to me she might be scared of eating large portions after feeling so ill and throwing up last week ( whi h she gulped down) mind you male dog is insisiting on onky eating what she eats and he's only gone once last Saturday and he hadn't been starved
No matter what the vets say I keep putting my ear to her tum in case I hear anything keep stroking it but only time its hard its before she pees and she's peeing for england honestly!

It could take anywhere from 1-2 weeks for her stools to return to normal. Mucous poop's aren't necessarily a bad thing. They can signal a few things, but mainly infection or parasites. My guess is she is having them due to the infection she is fighting. I would continue with the bland foods over Christmas, offering a few pieces of kibble at a time by hand. Make sure she has access to water 24/7. If she is eating boiled foods or wet dog food, then she will be getting some fuids into her. The IV's can make her feel full, so that's why she may not be eating a lot.

You can try making chicken ice cubes and offer those to her. Usre homemade chicken stalk, or use low sodium canned or boxed stuff dilute with water, (stay away from the Oxo type seasonings, they have way too much salt in them) and make into normal ice cubes. Lots of dogs get a kick out of licking ice cubes, so this just may interest her.

Thank you ever so much for helping me through:) she pooped never been happier to see a dog poo in my life lol! Solid hard and dry followed by soft but big so no obstuction yipee still had that nagging thouggt theyd missed something she's continuing bland and I asked for extra antibiotics in case she starts going of when she finishes her tablets on the 24th wouldn't want her going downhill and the vet taking long to get thanks and have a merry christmas you and yours xx

A diagnosis can only happen accurately if the dog is seen by a vet, having said that... vets are only human and sometimes they unwittingly make mistakes.

This is why I bring my dogs to the vet for their yearly check up, heartworm tests and purchases of Revolution to keep the heartworms, ticks and fleas away over the summer months here in Canada.

The REST OF THE TIME, if in the case my dogs should become ill like yours I take them to the Animal Hospital that houses a ton of different specialists for every situation known to dog kind.

I hope you live in a state/province that has such a hospital. Please consider going there as they are an emergency hospital dealing with all kinds of illness of any and every capasity.

Your BEST BET to clear up your dogs illness is best found there. I wish you well and have high hopes for your dog in such an establishment. Xo Happy Holidays xo :)

Sweet Dee, thanks for your in put but if you would have read the OP's posts, she has in fact taken the dog to the vet, a few different time. In fact she even went to get a second opinion from another vet. ;)

Hi again unfortunately she threw up again on Wednesday night and is again refusing to eat or drink took her to vet again been given tablets for apetite and stomach gel funny thing though when getting home id forgotten the other dogs kibble was out she went to it and ate quite a bit compared to how little she's been eating tonight though she's low again syringing water with mineral salts frequently honestly I'm getting depressed out of worry now she won't have bland food but ate kibble? Her tummy can still be upset from the infection. Just like when people have the flu, they throw up to get the "infection" out of their bodies. A single puke usually isn't cause for concern, it's when it's continuous vomiting. It's a good sign that she was eating the kibble with no diarrhea. Hang in there. :)

Just a few thoughts that came to my mind while reading these posts:

Honeygibo, you mention she ate the other dog's kibble so I am assuming she has her own food. I am wondering if her own kibble has been infected by something that is making her ill, such as mold, bacteria, or an additive that occurred accidentally. You might want to throw away her kibble and buy a new bag. Prior to that, just doublecheck with your vet you aren't using a kibble that might have been tampered with or is on a "watch" list.

I am also wondering if maybe she is eating something the other dogs are leaving alone. Think hard about what you have lying around the house that she might consider to be food that you wouldn't (kitty litter? any chemicals that she can get into?). The other thing that came to my mind is pancreatitis. Did your vet check for that or check your dog's bloodwork for any pesticides or poison?

I do hope she has improved today and my post wasn't necessary.

Hi thanks for answering the other dogs kibble is the same shed eat if she wasn't on a bland diet they eat the same stuff but she's been put on bland since becoming ill shell be checked for pancreatis if. NOt better by Wednesday, the tests hadn't arrived yet! Apart from that I'm still syringinv the water qith pedylite and she stole my mums digestive biscuits from the table laat night too so she definitely doesn't want anything bland I have therfore left their kibble out hoping it gets her interest like yesteeday as it didn't make her ill on the contrary she pooped again after 2 days it's the first time I've come across a case of a dog preferring dry crunchy hard food to boiled chicken or fish usually shed scoff that down if it weren't for the differnce in her 'spark' id think she's sick of being sick she seems herself when going for walks seems to forget gets home and starts hidding tail between legs etc no more vomits or dia but forced drink though shell happily lap wagee from my hands spent from 4 to 5 am last night scooping water from the bowl in my hans whilst she licked it dry lol the more I ignore her the better she acts in a way so I'm just checking for dehydration and otherwise leaving her alone :)

Soory would like to add no pesticides at home we have no garden or anything here and. O garage so indoors there's not even bleach I

Here is an easy way to test for dehydration. I am just copy and pasting from another post I have made, it says "puppy" but the same goes for adult dog.

In the mean time, TEMPERATURE - always monitor a parvo puppy's temperature. Holistic norm is 100.5 to 101.5, anything other than this is either a low or high grade fever. We use those nice digital thermometers.

High grade fever tells us a pup could dehydrate more quickly, as they are overheating, so they may need extra fluids. A fever can also tell us there is a secondary infection going on for which he may need anti-biotic treatment. Get him to drink as much water as you can, if he will not drink on his own, then get an eye dropper and force the water in. Don't worry about force feeding the food, if your dog does in fact have a fever, then do not offer any foods until the fever has been gone for 24 hours. Well hydrated puppies have dark pink gums, well, in those breeds that have pink gums to begin with. Very light pink, white, or grayish gums means one of two things - either the puppy has excessive worms or they are dehydrated. You can also pinch their skin to test hydration. Pinch the skin on your forearm and it immediately goes back into place meaning YOU are NOT dehydrated. Pinch the puppies skin, if it goes back into place immediately, this indicates they are hydrated. If their skin sticks and takes a second or two to go back into place, they are dehydrated.

A low grade fever tells us the puppy is chilled. When we are "chilled", we put on a sweater, jacket, or cover up with a warm blanket. The same courtesy should be extended to our puppy family members who have low grade fevers. No need to sit them on the furnace, but a light blanket helps them to keep their body heat in check, which can help them feel better and conserve their much needed energy for healing, instead of heating. A low grade fever also tells us that any fluids we give the puppy should be warmed to body temperature, as giving cold fluids would bring down the puppy's body temperature further.

Ok its christmas day and I've had to call the emergency vet at 0100 hrs was resting ( on guest bed as dog sleeping with me for now) and we had only just got to settle when she suddenly gets up smelling the air like a lunatic I thought she smelled some food or something but now she was going in circles smelling the air whilst her legs where very uncoordinated and falling over rushed to vet had extra x-rays with barium still all clear not dehydrated but id been syringing her fluids been checked and rechecked the only option left its psycological seems she was ill and is now making her self ill was given ad diet to inject in mouth force feed her as she seems to have had a hypo well on getting home she liked the smell and it semmed I wouldn't need to force her but nope walks away so I dumped it in back of her throat and she left after a couple of bites to go an drink all by herself! So fingers crossed have to do the same for next couple of days at least a tin a day

I hope your girl pulls through. I have no further advice that I can offer. I am not a vet, but I will keep your dog in my thoughts, and please know, I am very sorry for your situation. Please continue to keep us posted.And follow any advice offered by your vet(s). My best guess, is a failure with something, but again, I am only guessing on the symptoms you are describing with out being able to physically see your dog, and even if I could, I am not a vet.
