Filing tax for previous year for F1 students
Hi,I am F1 student from India.I came USA at 07 and never made any money working, but did filed my tax online for 09 on turbo-tax as student filer. However I wasn't aware about taxation before that and haven't had my tax filed for 07 and 08 and want to file now. I am wondering what can I do now to correct that. In doing so do I end paying IRS money or what.really appreciate your help sir."

    Dixit:

If you made NO money in 2007 or 2008, you had NO requirement to file any tax return. Under the U.S.-India Tax Treaty, any income received from India is exempt from U.S. income taxes.

If you filed a tax return for 2009 on-line, then you filed as a resident, and that filing was incorrect.

You SHOULD have filed as a non-resident alien, filing Form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ plus Form 8843. Note that Form 8843 must be filed annually even if you have no requirement to file a tax return.

I would need to see the copy of the 2009 return to determine if you owe any additional taxes.
