    Birth certificate question
My mother was always told her entire life that her last name was Jones.when I sent for her baptism certificate it shows my mothers name smith, fathers name smithand her mothers maiden name smith.I don't see how all 3 names can be the same.I am trying to get her birth certificate but they need proof that she is my mom before I can order it.the problem my birth certificae has moms maiden name as jones who was her stepfather name.I don't have any document saying my moms maiden name is smith. Any help would be appreciated.

Is your mom (or a relative who would know) still alive?

First unless she married, within her own family it is very very rare to have the same maiden name and married name.
Ok, not if you have a real common name, smith or johnson or something.

And you should have school records, ( if dead, a death certificate) also look for her marriage records.
Even your birth certificate, often they had to list mothers maiden name.

If it is a hyphenated name as in soandso brown-smith, yes, but what exactly do you mean.

Example child's name mary jones, fathers name joe jones, mothers maiden name ann jones.all I can think of the child's mother was raped by her father or step father that is why all 3 last names are the same.

debfla, please don't start a question all over again in a new post.
Your first question with the real names still isn't totally clear.
It's an interesting problem and I'm sure many people want to help.
Can you list each name and your relationship to them?

Yes, I understand what you are getting at. This doesn't make any difference; and yes you are probably right. It won't be the fist time a because is like this. What exactly is your concern though. It has no other alternative, really.

I think you are making a mistake assuming rape so soon.
    Your mother's Baptism Certificate:
Your mother's maiden name is smith
    Your father's name is smith
Your mother's mother's maiden name is smith
Your Birth Certificate: says your last name is jones, which was your mother's stepfather's name
(No father listed, right? Not important.)

What if your father was a cousin? He might have been young, or married, or family might not have approved of a cousin match. How old was your mother when she had you? Do you know of any male smith's still alive who are around your mother's age now? When did your mother's stepfather marry her mother?

Again, please don't think the worst. It might be a very sweet story. Wait until you really know.

I've merged your two threads. I've also changed the names

I agree that you shouldn't be jumping to conclusions. There could be many explanations.
