    Interstate Transfer of Probation
My son is 19 years old, living in NYC. He is on 10 years probation for a sexual offense. He was tried as a youthful offender, and is not required to register as a sex offender. He is employed full time and is in therapy in accordance with the terms of his probation. We are interested in transferring his probation from NY to Louisiana to live with me (his father), to work here, and attend school. I am looking for any information regarding the process of probation transferance. Thank you.

    Hello Mr:

You're going to need the probation department in Louisiana to accept him. Call them up and ask them. He's probably going to need a job BEFORE they let him go, but they'll probably let him.

His PO in NY should be able to help you through the procedures.

He will have to apply with his PO in NY. First they will have to agree to release him to LA. Next LA will have to agree to accept him.

And as stated, normally they will want to be sure the terms of the probation can be fully completed. Also if he can show a place to live and a job arranged there, it will be easier.

But depending on the crime itself it may or may not be allowed.

His first stop will be his probation officer.

Please be careful regarding the transfer. I transferred mine from PA to NV and everything was good, until I was arrested in NV for failure to report in PA and extradited back to PA. My probation officer NEVER did the paperwork, and I spent 3 months in federal prison for a violation, and also lost a 1400.00 a week job over it. GET PAPERWORK FROM THE ORIG. PROBATION OFFICER STATING ITS OK FOR HIM TO LEAVE THE STATE!
