My heater when on off continues to smell like burnt (a gust every 20 min).

In the master bedroom and the living room even though this is like our 6th time using the heater this season. On top of the smell the air handle continues to heat up to the point that we have to turn off the breaker. Scared to keep using the heater but its to cold not to use it at night when we have a baby in the house. What could this be please help?
