Install toilet flange to lead pipe
I removed a 60 year old toilet and the flange came off with it. We have about 1/2" of a lead pipe protruding from the floor. (It connects to a cast iron waste stack). The floor around it is ceramic tile over a 1.5" concrete slab. What type of flange should I be using to connect to this?

    Hey Vic,
I was plumbing before flanges and lead closet bends were made of lead. We would flare out the lead pipe on the floor for a inch or so and then form a rope of plumbers putty for a seal. After we set the toilet we secured it with wood screw closet bolts. (see image).
So much for the history lesson. Most people, (and some plumbers) think a flange is necessary to set a toilet. It's not!
If you had more stock in the flare you could do it this way but I like to see a little more flare to put a putty seal on. However a wax seal with a funnel ,(see image) might just work so I'm going to give you as few optiuons,
1)you can set the toilet wax seal on the flare and using a 1/4" masonry bit drill and using plastic inserts secure the bowl with wood screw closet bolts. **OR**
    2) Purchase a flat closet flange ,(see image) these will have no collar and my be brass. You will still need to secure your new flange to the floor with inserts and screws but once installed you can set your toilet in the usual manner.
    Good luck, Tom

Forgot to say in other reply... I could not find anything at Home Depot or Lowe's and had to go online and searched for an answer... I was ready to give up when I found the Set-Rite video on YouTube...

They don't make them like they used to... plumbers that is! I found a product that was invented by this builder that seems to address any problem with toilet flanges. Whether they are too low, unsupported or made of cast iron. Their video also address the 'lead bend' repair. I ordered one and the kit did everything it said it would... my flange was almost 1" lower than my finished tile floor...it took me less than an hour to install it myself. I had a plumber friend come over and although he initially told me to "... just use two wax rings." (yeah right!) he was sold after we installed the kit. It is called Set-Rite and I found their video on YouTube but ordered the kit from www.set-rite.com
