Hi, my wife and I have recently noticed a sewage smell from the pump area. How do I troubleshoot and fix this problem? The pump seems to work OK since we hear a loud bang from other areas of the house except there is this air/gas flowing back from the sewer which I think is creating the smell. I want to fix this problem soon before something happens since I do not have flood insurance for either one of my pumps (sump and ejector). Please let me know what I should do. Thanks!!

Is this pump inside a sump pump pit or is it a sewage ejector which is sealed?

An ejector pit should be well sealed or you will get smells. Make sure the ejector and vent pipe seals are in place, not broken and no holes in the lid. The cover should be tight and not wiggle. There should be screws holding the top to the tank. Make sure they are tight. You may have to caulk the lip between the top and the concrete. Smells get aggravated when the wind blows down the roof vent and pressurizes the tank, leaking out into the room.
