It should, as long as it is only a simple switch. Some of the electronic speed controls, dimmers, etc, require an equipment ground to operate.

The basic answer is yes. Is this for a bathroom? Are you trying to hook up a GFCI? With the exception of some ballasted flourescents, the ground has no function other than that of a safety link. It takes an energy source and sends it to a grounded system rather that through something with more resistance, possibly your body. What prompted the question?

Thanks. It's a fan/light switch for a fan. I know an occupancy sensor will not work without a ground. Just wondered about
    The fan/light switch.

Its for a ceiling fan. Not a gfci. And without a ground, I know an occupancy sensor will not work. Thanks for your answer
