Don't get yourself into a druggy sleep-wake problem like Elvis did. It killed him.

Getting into a consistent nighttime ritual/routine will help a lot.

A natural sleep aid is Melatonin.

Your doctor is a trained professional that spent years in medical school,he/she knows what their talking about.

I can only add to the advice already given.

    1. take regular exercise.

    2. is stress apart of the problem? If so,what's causing it and what can you do to help yourself.

    3. mostly insomnia for some people does not last more then a few nights perhaps for some weeks... your body will sleep, you cannot survive without sleep,so you will get some rest, even if only for a few hours.

If the problem persists I would go back to the doctor.

Most over the counter sleeping aids are very mild and work in harmony with your body,if you have a deeper issue they won't help.

Try everything else first before you go down the route of perscription sleeping tablets.

Adding to red head. There are so many possibilities, even sleep apnea. Insomnia is a medical diagnosis, so don't jump the gun. See a sleep specialist. Your doctor does not want you to become dependent on sleep Rx.
