Live in Florida but own a coop in NYC. Where do I file?
I'm a flight attendant who lives in Florida and have a commuter place in NYC. In January 2010 I purchased this commuter place (it's a coop). How does that affect my taxes? Can I still file my taxes in Florida although I own real estate in NYC? I spend more time in Florida than NY.

If it were any plave other than New York City, I would say you would have no problem (especially if your W-2 does not reflect any of your income as being NY-sourced), but NYC has some rather unique tax policies when it comes to people like you.

They (NYC and NY state) will essentally consider you to be a part-time resident who earns a portion of their income while in residency. That portion will thus be subject to BOTH NY state and NYC income tax, plus a commuter tax.

You can email your details (how much time you spend in NYC and how much you earn) to [email protected] and I will give you more detailed guidance.
