Sewage smell coming from washing machine drain pipe
For the past few days there has been a strong sewage smell coming from the drain pipe for the washing machine in our laundry room. It's not the hose from the washer itself, but the pipe that the hose drains into. I've done several loads of laundry, one with bleach, and showered and done dishes as I normally would have, but the smell hasn't gone away. In fact, it seems to be getting worse. We're on city water. None of the other pipes smell this way. The main part of the house was built in the 1930's, but the part that the washer is in was built probably in the 60's or 70's (judging from the type of carpet). Not quite sure because I'm just renting the house. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Try this. Tonight pour a 1/2 gallon of bleach down the pope and let it set overnight.
Next morning flush it away with a couple of large pans on boiling water. Also if you have a floor drain pour a quart of cooking oil down the drain. Good luck, Tom

Trying now. Will get back to you in 12-24 hours. Thanks so much!

Unfortunately, it didn't work. Still smells pretty bad. Is there something else I could try?

Does the stanchion pipe for washer have a trap on it? If not there is your problem. The trap should stop sewer gases from coming into house.

Do you hear any gurgles or sounds coming from the washer stand pipe when something's drained of flushed? Let me know, Tom
