    Is a hotdog stand profitable?
My husband and I are retired but we would like to make a little extra money. My husband is thinking of starting a hotdog stand. Can anyone tell me if they have had any experience at this? I have owned and run five restaurants before but never anything like a hotdog stand. Would a hotdog stand be very profitable and where would be the best locations for it?

    Hello C:

Having run restaurants, the word "would" doesn't compute... The correct word is COULD. Could a hotdog stand be very profitable?? You bet it could. Where would be the best location?? That's the key question, isn't it. You need to be where there's a lot of foot traffic.

Chicago is planning to allow a variety of food carts in the near future. Only problem is, they would be a three-season thing. Innovation would be what gets you a city contract and what would draw people to your cart (plus you'd have to learn how to make a Chicago hot dog).

Research what would make your hot dog stand unique -- e.g. the much-loved stand in my town is near the village pool and largest park, and sells better french fries than McDonald's.
