You'd have to ask him why he wears a tie. Maybe he just likes the classy look of a tie with a suit.
The tie was originally worn to clean the faces of the battlefield soldiers. It was introduced by Napoleon's men as a 'dignified' way of cleaning their noses and faces.
Today it is a fashion statement. It 'ties' in the colors of the shirt, belt, trousers and shoes.
It is not in any way a symbol of the cross.
