If you bought the latex paint at a paint store I suggest talking with them about what you could do. Different paints react differently to having things applied over them. If you didn't buy it from a painty store you can still ask the advice of a paint store pro.

Probably too late for the answer you need but for others here you go. Use a latex enamel paint (pittsburg grand distinction). I would go with at least a satin to be safe and get away from any possible "chalking" when you rub it. Make sure you know what you are painting over first but taking a rag and a little denatured alcohol and rubbing it onto the surface. If paint transfers to rag it is latex.. if not and just shines up the surface its solvant based (oil).
Whenever you switch from latex to oil.oil to latex you need to prime surface. If you are reapplying anything to an oil surface you will need to lightly sand or use a deglosser.

For increasing durability on oil base painted cabinets, clear coat with polyurethane. If it is a latex (probably) use a Polyacrylic clear coat. It will make all the difference in clean up and longevity.
