Our dog Dee-Dee was given antifreeze on jan 28th or 29th. I nursed her through this poison working through her system and she started eating again on jan 1st or 2nd but not I am having to feed her with a syringe again. Do you have any suggestion on what she might eat. I have made her filet's of beef, hamburger meat, tried her on potted meat, sardines, cottage cheese, cheese, milk, bread, can dog food and now I am forcing baby food and pedisure. We picked up some nutra cal for the vet but she throws it up every time I have used it. I am thinking when she did start eating she would throw it up so she does not want to eat now, but I am not sure. Please help and any suggestions are welcome.

How terrible. You might try this:

3 parts cooked rice, one part boiled hamburger or chicken, or cottage cheese. I think you can substitute boiled potatoes for the rice. Once in an emergency, we bought a plain baked potato from Wendy's.

This is meant for short time settling a dog's digestive tract. It is not the complete and balanced diet they need long term. Most dogs will keep it down.

You might try the stinky canned cat food. Most dogs just can't seem to resist it. Canned small breed puppy is extremely nutrient rich too. I strongly want to emphasis that this is only to keep her going until she is back to normal. She really needs to be back on a normal kibble and little else as soon as possible.

If you look at a couple of other recent questions, you can see this is not my usual advice.

Please be careful to keep her at home in the future and don't leave her out unattended. You don't want it happening again.

Has the vet checked her liver and kidney function? Despite the time frame, I would be very worried about this since the kidney and liver are the organs responsible for taking toxins out of the system.

Please let us know how you make out

Have you tried organic chicken broth? I would advise as much as possible to use organic food since her liver and kidneys are probably compromised. Also filtered water.

I would definitely talk to a holistic vet about her diet. They are very up to date and knowledgeable about nutrition, usually more so than a regular vet. A holistic vet might give you herbs to try and detoxify her and possibly acidophilus and bifidus to try and get her digestive track balanced again.

Many holistic vets will even give you a phone consultation since you already have a diagnosis. So you can talk to a top well known holistic vet anywhere in the country. Most of the remedies they will give you can be used along with your regular vets medications.

Please let us know how she is doing. Poor baby.

    I hope this helps.
