I want to raise a 1970's American Standard wall hung toilet 4'. I have replaced the wax rings in these before but I have not done this project. I think I can just remove the toilet and hanger extent the waste line the 4" and reinstall the hanger, patch the wall and install the toilet. Am I being niave?

Just to be sure this is a wall hung bowl,(see image) and not a tank, correct?

You make it all sound so simple.
"extend the waste line". To raise the drain on a wall hung toilet the stack will have to be cut and the sanitary tee raised. Next the carrier will have not be moved and supported. Now the water line will have to be brought out. And now you can set the bowl. Good luck, Tom

Like Tom said, if this is a residential carrier system then moving them up 4" can be quite involved.

If, however, there is no carrier, but instead some piping and a homemade hanger system then you can certainly move things around and make all work out in the end, but even this will involve lots of work... ;)

So are you on a carrier system (see 2nd image) or do you have a carrier hanger (see 1st image) or a homemade hanger there? Let us know...

I would be more concerned about cutting the stack and raising the tee. Seems to men raising the carrier involves woodworking and carpentry while cutting into then stack and raising the tee involves plumbing skills. I would still liken to know if you're setting up for a handicapped toilet?> Cheers, Tom
