I've been trying to find the rest of a little poem by Hughes Mearns but I've been unsuccessful. It goes something like this:
Yesterday while climbing up the stair
I met a man who wasn't there
He wasn't there again today
I wish I wish he'd go away

Any way I goes like this
Yesterday upon the stair
I met a man who wasn't there
He wasn't there again today
Oh how I wish he'd go away
And I'm pretty sure that the whole poem
There are many versions of this piece (titled "Antigonish"), but the original poem in it's entirety is:
When I was going up the stair
I saw a man who wasn't there
He wasn't there again today
I wish, I wish he's stay away
As I was walking up the stair,
I met a man that wasn't there
He wasn't there again today
I wish, I wish he'd go away.
When I came home last night at three
The man was waiting there for me
But when I looked around the hall
I could not see him there at all.
Go away, go away, don't come back anymore,
Go away, go away and please don't slam the door.
As I was Walking up the stair,
I met a man who wasn't there.
He wasn't there again today.
I wish, I wish he'd go away.
Antigonish- Hughes Mearns
As I was going up the stair
I saw a man who wasn't there
He wasn't there again today
Oh, how I wish he'd go away
When I came home last night at three
The man was waiting there for me
But when I looked around the hall
I couldn't see him there at all
Go away, go away, don't come back anymore
Go away, go away, and please don't slam the door... (slam!)
Last night I saw upon the stair
A little man who wasn't there
He wasn't there again today
Oh, how I wish he'd go away

But when I looked around the hall
I could not see him there at all!
Go away, go away, don't come back anymore!
Go away, go away and please don't slam the door... (slam!)
Last night I saw upon the stair,
A little man who wasn't there.
He wasn't there again today.
Oh how I wish,he'd go away

The other day, upon a stair,
I met a man who wasn't there.
He wasn't there again today;
To his Glory let us pray.
Yesterday, upon the stair,
I met a man who wasn't there.
He's not been there a day or three,
I think he's from the EAC!
I asked another if he saw
The little man, he answered "Naw."
I've proved it true, I'm satisfied --
He can't be seen! I haven't lied!
Yesterday, upon the stair,
I met a man who wasn't there
He wasn't there again today
I wish, I wish he'd go away...
