When you turn the key the motor will barely turn over and starter starts to smoke... thanks for any suggestions

Hi,
Whether you have something like a bad connection in play or not, you would seem to have a bad starter. Smoking is never a good thing when DC motors are involved. The dynamics of those motors is that for each shorted wire, one good wire is also cancelled out.
