Hi Acmanges...
What floor is the sink on? Are there any floors with plumbing above this sink/bathroom? Did the toilet get messy as well? Finally, are there separate units connected together as in a bunch of townhomes side by side?
Please answer these questions and perhaps I can formulate an idea of events... ;)

The bathroom sink in question is on the first floor. No other toilets or drains were messy. Apparently my husband showered upstairs from the sink this morning. It's a single home built in the 1950s.
There is a common drain line between the two floors... I suspect a smaller, 2" line. See if you can find the pipe in the basement and if you are lucky you'll find a cleanout and you guys can snake the drain.
You can rent a snake or you can call a drain company.
Good luck!
