A friend claims that her lawsuit money has a lien on it from Social Security, however that money is not even in her account. She returned it so they could break it into smaller amounts. Money is in the hands of the Attorneys she sued. How can Social Security put a lien on money that is not in your bank account? The reason I'm asking is because she has been borrowing money from me and I would like to get it back. Thanks

A lien is an encumbrance that prevents someone from transferring assets until the lien is satisfied. So there is no problem putting a line on a bank account or even a law suit settlement.

Yes it is possible that the attorneys were served and it has frozen the money, she will of course be able to show you copies of the paperwork doing this
