I currently work in Afghanistan, Do I have to pay Georgia state taxes?
I currently work in Afghanistan, (Army Contractor) I work out of Ft. Lewis Washington and my home of residence is Georgia where my wife and kids are. My wife does not work. So should I have to pay Georgia State taxes? And if so, should it be a limited amount? I paid in close to $8,000 to state last year and got back $1,800? Is that right?

    JohnnyRay:

Unfortunately, you paying Georgia state income tax IS accurate and appropriate.

Even though you both live and work in Afghanistan, your home of residence is clearly the state of Georgia, because that is where your family lives. Since you retain residence in Georgia, the state of Georgia (like the U.S. government) holds that ALL of your world-wide income is subject to Georgia state income tax.

The only way to avoid that is to change your state of residence, which would involve moving your family.
